Why TV series have become so popular

These days, the popularity of television series is quite remarkable -- the likes of which we've never quite seen before. Whether it's friends, family, or co-workers, it seems everyone watches at least one TV series. Among the most popular ones are:

The Walking Dead
Game of Thrones
Empire
Breaking Bad
True Detective
Sherlock

Now, I've never been one to watch these kinds of shows, but when I first saw True Detective being advertised, it looked interesting -- and so I figured that watching one episode couldn't hurt. I became instantly hooked! It was only then I understood why so many people I know become so enthralled by these shows.

I started thinking about the reasons why these shows resonate so closely with us, the viewers.

Here are a couple of reasons that may explain their surge in popularity in recent years:

They distract us from our daily lives: Considering that our lives seem to be getting busier and more stressful by the day, these shows offer welcome respite - a "mental escape," if you will.
Social media has provided exposure: Not a day goes by where I don't see one of my Facebook friends post something about their favorite show(s) on their Wall. Without a doubt, social media has helped spread the word about these shows, appealing to viewers across different age groups.
The rise of streaming content: With streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Instant Video at people's disposal, there's really little reason to leave the house. People are using such channels to catch up on shows at their leisure. Some go as far as to watch an entire season's worth of episodes in one day.
Easy on the wallet: Despite the monthly fees one incurs for streaming content, it's still cheaper in the long run than catching several flicks at the movie theater each year. You're getting more bang for your buck.

Will this trend continue, or is it only a fad? That remains to be determined, but judging from the impressive ratings and rave views these shows continue to get, something tells me they're here to stay indefinitely.

No response from someone IS a response

Make no mistake about it: When you don't get a response from someone -- whether they fail to answer your texts or return your phone calls -- it is still a response, and a powerful one at that. When a person fails to respond, it's a direct reflection of their interest -- or lack thereof -- in the relationship. Few things are more aggravating than having to hound a partner, friend, or relative for some sort of reply after we've reached out to them. Yes, we get busy from time to time, but that doesn't give anyone the right to leave the other person hanging. A terse text with something like "Been busy, will reach out soon" doesn't say much, but at least it shows some effort to bring the other person up to speed on why they've fallen off the radar. Failing to provide a response for weeks -- if not months -- communicates that you are just not a priority, and that you'll have to wait your turn to get this individual's attention. This is n...

The 1 good thing cheaters do for us

Nothing good could come of a relationship marred by infidelity, right? The heartache, the shock, the feeling of one's trust being violated. In the short-term, being cheated on can turn one's world upside down. But eventually, there may be a light awaiting the cheated at the end of the tunnel. If you really think about it, cheaters end up doing us a huge favor. In their selfishness and disloyalty, they end up showing us that we deserve better. If you're so unfortunate as to be a victim of such acts of betrayal, you can only hope the cheater is considerate enough to own up to their missteps. But we all know full well that, in many cases, the cheater is either caught in the act or leaves behind a trail of hints that ultimately culminates in their undoing.
