Utah state senator Todd Weiler wants Utah to declare pornography a public health crisis. He's introduced new legislation that calls for education, prevention, research, and policy change at the community and societal level in order to tackle what he says is a pornography epidemic that is hurting people in Utah and throughout the U.S. Utah has one of the nation’s highest rates of porn use. Weiler insists that this isn't a veiled attempt at foisting his conservative beliefs on people. He says he simply wishes to raise awareness of the many perils of pornography. In addition to being highly addictive, Weiler asserts it undermines families, strains relationships, and plays a key role in many divorces in Utah. But some people feel pornography isn't as damaging as Weiler is making it out to be. Jared Fogle became the face of Subway after the sandwich chain released a commercial in 2000 chronicling his impressive weight loss journey -- one that saw him drop close to 250 pounds thanks to his exercise routine and a simple diet that included Subway sandwiches. Fast forward to 2015 and the bespectacled pitchman finds his life in shambles. He intends to plead guilty to child pornography charges and to traveling across state lines to pay for sex with minors. The plea deal would see Fogle serve between 5 and 12 1/2 years of jail time. Not surprisingly, Subway cut all ties with Fogle as soon as his home was raided by authorities. If you really think about it, life is truly about resisting temptation. It lurks behind every corner in our present society. It has become far to easy for us to fall into temptation, putting our health and/or relationships at risk. The media, television, advertising, the internet, and technology in general are partly to blame for our being influenced into doing many of these things, but human beings, for their part, are notoriously bad at exercising self-control. Close to two years ago, a movie called "Don Jon," starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Scarlett Johansson, and Julianne Moore, hit theaters. Johansson, who plays Levitt's girlfriend in the movie, walks in on him one day as he's watching and masturbating to an adult film. That act alone caused the wheels of the relationship to fall off, and Levitt's character ends up finding a much more understanding partner in Moore, who doesn't seem to mind his habit as much.  The movie perfectly captures how some women may bristle at the thought or sight of their partners watching porn, while others may find it perfectly acceptable. The first group of women may contend that a guy needn't look at porn when he has a woman -- and a good one at that -- in his life.
