Why repetition can get old really fast

The more frequently we do something, the less pleasure we derive from it over time.

Whether you're eating your favorite food, having sex, or playing your favorite sport every single day, your enjoyment of something gradually diminishes the more you do it.

Most people would say their first viewing of a movie is the one they find most enjoyable. Why? Because it's something novel. They're absorbing everything about the movie -- the plot, the characters, the funny moments -- for the first time, so it all has a more profound effect. Once they've seen it a couple of times, they might still enjoy it, but not nearly as much.

It happens even in relationships. Some people will admit that they get bored in relationships in which they see their partner very often. They assert that giving each other some space -- in other words, giving one another the opportunity to miss each other -- makes for a better, more exciting relationship.

Sometimes, anticipation can be as sweet -- if not more so -- than actually experiencing something. Many of us have gone a long time without eating a particular food we love -- say, pizza -- and felt in heaven once we opt to indulge in it once more.

Longing for something can make the experience all the more satisfying once it comes to pass. We want what we can't have. The harder it is to obtain something, the more desirable it is in our eyes.

On the other hand, if something is readily available -- and we happen to do or consume it multiple times over the course of a week -- repetition and routine can set in, and we may eventually grow bored.

There's no harm in changing it up once in a while so as to prevent this from happening. Resist the urge to eat the same foods, visit the same places, and hang around the same people too often. Variety can really keep things more interesting.
